“The measure of a civilization is how it treats its weakest members…” (source: Pearl S. Buck, and more recently Pope Francis)
If we are to examine the proposals to cut or discontinue health care and social services for our nation’s elderly, we would be disappointed to learn that there appears to be a concerted effort to gradually erase some of our most vulnerable citizens. Take for instance the move to force those who depend on Medi-Cal to have to work to continue these heretofore guaranteed benefits. Through no fault of their own, those with insufficient funds or assets, and in poor health must depend on Government (note taxpayer funds) assistance to enable them to get lifesaving medicines, in home services, dental and optical services, physical therapy, mental health evaluations, transportation, etc.
Those over the age of 60, who depend on Older Americans Act services (first begun in 1960 under Presidents Eisenhower and Kennedy) are vulnerable to Trump who is looking for ways to cut or eliminate meals-on-wheels, in home supportive services, HUD sponsored housing assistance, CHIP, and the HOPE programs, just to name a few. For what reasons: to ensure that the recent tax cuts will enhance the bank and stock accounts of those least in need!! Just look at how the new so called “tax reform” is structured, in addition to that, states that did not vote in the majority for Trump seem to be punished by this action!
There is now talk of altering the Social Security Act passed under Pres. Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1935 to assist our elderly and disabled citizens; and the Medicare program enacted into law in 1965 under Pres. Johnson. Having worked in the field of gerontology for the past 50 years, I have seen how important these programs are to our elderly and disabled citizens. Do any of you remember the “poor houses” in the 1940s, 50s, and 60s, for those who did not have assets to pay for basic “room and board”?
What are YOU going to do about this reign of terror and ensure that our elderly are given the consideration and respect they are due? For starters, you may visit www.indivisible.org for ideas!
HERE IS SOME DATA TO CONSIDER:
Currently 55 million Americans receive Medicare benefits. Over 59 million receive Social Security benefits and 167 million are currently paying into this government sponsored system of security for their future! Medicaid and CHIP (health care for our children) covers 70 million. One in 6 seniors struggle with food insecurity! Sources: US Govt data
