Children's Liturgy of the Word will resume in person when limitations are lifted on the number of peole who can attend Mass.
At the 10:30 Mass before the readings, school-aged children (grades 1-6) including middle schoolers, are called forward for a blessing then form a procession to their own Liturgy of the Word. This is where they hear the readings in easy language suited to their age-level.
They hear the same readings as the adults hear—usually only the gospel— but using a very simplified version for the younger children. The older ones hear the reading from the Lectionary for Children compiled by the U.S. Catholic Bishops using the Contemporary English Version.
This is a regular part of the 10:30 Mass from September to May and helps our young ones grow in their love of Jesus through the stories of the holy Scripture.
St. Columba is able to do this for our children because of the generosity of parish volunteers and parents who assist. The sessions are put together by a religious publisher with a handout for the children and a guide for the Word minister.
There are opportunities for family follow-up during the week with questions and activities.
You can find the family guide online at: pflaumweeklies.com
As a parent (grandparent/guardian) you may want to ask your children what they heard and talked about, using the student activity handout.
If you have questions or want to participate or volunteer please contact Margaret Roncalli at 510-550-4058 or [email protected].
If you have further questions about the Lectionary, what it is an accepted Catholic translation of the bible, please visit the U.S. Catholic Bishops website at: www.usccb.org/bible/liturgy.
